Dear MEL Topic Readers

Here’s how much fast food Americans are eating

Is McDonald’s a treat or a last resort? A recent study found that nearly 40% of adults in the US eat fast food on any given day. That means the rest of adults eat home-made meals including sandwiches or cereals, restaurant or airplane meals, or prepared or packaged foods like salad or lasagna. Considering the overweight and obesity ratios among Americans, fast food consumption, often accompanied by sugary drinks, seems more than too much. Since fast food is often rich in fat, calories and sodium, frequent eaters raise the risk of suffering obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.

Another finding of the survey is also surprising. People with higher income ate more fast food than those with middle income, and people with lower income ate less fast food than the middle class. Fast food doesn’t seem to be a meal of convenience for everyone.

Enjoy reading and think what food you consider as fast food and how often you eat it.
