Dear MEL Topic Readers,

Essential foods for Chinese New Year’s Eve

A lunar calendar is based on the monthly cycles of the Moon’s phases that turn approximately 29 and a half days in the solar calendar. Therefore, a lunar year is about 354 days, about 10 days shorter than that of a solar year. For Chinese people, Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, is the biggest annual event. They celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season from New Year’s Eve with family members, which creates the world’s largest human migration each year. This year, the first day of the Chinese New Year was February 12, which is the Year of the Ox. It is also the time to enjoy having very special foods and meals according to the traditions of the region. As you know, foods vary greatly by region in China. Indeed, China is a big country by size and has the longest history, and Chinese people are very keen on enjoying foods together. What do they eat for this special occasion?

Enjoy seeing the photos of delightful foods and meals for the Chinese New Year.
