Dear MEL Topic Readers,

Same winter, different way to school

Guizhou is a mountainous, landlocked province in the southwest region of China. Though it is rich in natural and environmental resources, it had not been economically so prosperous until recently. However, thanks to the central government’s support, Guizhou is now one of China’s fastest-growing economies especially in data and technological industries.

There, a 68-year-old grandfather in a rural mountain village used to take his 8-year-old grandson and 6-year-old granddaughter to and from school each day that sat four kilometers away since their parents lived and worked in a city as migrant workers. It took them an hour each way to walk across a hill. It sounds like a kind of modern folktale, doesn’t it? The long daily walk must have given them the chance to talk a lot about children’s schooldays and the old man’s life stories. It must have been long and hard but also precious time for them. What was the old man doing while he was waiting for his grandchildren?

Now, the family moved to a new residential community in a poverty alleviation relocation site in a town. It takes the young siblings only 10 minutes to walk to school and kindergarten. It also relieved the old man from most of his duties to keep his living, not to mention the long walk to and from school. What does the old man do now during the day?
