Dear MEL Topic Readers

How the Finish survive without small talk?

Small talk is not a small thing, especially in English-speaking cultures where “how are you?” is like a start button for social interactions. No serious answer is expected to it. However, Finnish people take it as a real question and try to answer seriously. That’s because small talk isn’t common in Finland. Unless they have an agenda that require verbal interaction, they opt not to speak to others. However, that doesn’t mean they dislike talking. In fact, they become quite talkative when they are in a sauna or with their close friends. They just respect others’ comfort and try not to bother it. Also, they tend to choose to not say anything to avoid any misunderstanding. Silence seems to be part of a conversation.

Is small talk common in your culture?

Enjoy reading and think if ‘Silence is gold, talking is silver’ culture fits your personality.
