Dear MEL Topic Readers

Harvard – should race count in university admissions?

What is fair to some may be unfair to others. One of the most prominent higher education institutes in the world, Harvard University, has been maintaining the affirmative action based admission policy to ensure students diversity in their campus. Affirmative action has been practiced in many workplaces and colleges in the US to remove racial and gender discriminations, and colleges are permitted to consider race as a factor when admitting students. However, those who could have been enrolled if the admission had been made strictly by academic qualifications are not happy with the policy and filed a lawsuit against Harvard.

What are the missions, objectives or practices of higher education? Should colleges enroll only those who qualify the academic requirements regardless of the race or gender? Or, should they ensure diverse ethnic and social mix that students will be likely to work in or engage after graduating from college?

Enjoy reading and think which academic environment is more educational for students.
