Dear MEL Topic Readers,

A guide to how you can support marginalized communities

America again is showing another deeply rooted division. This time, not gun control or politics but racial discrimination.

On May 25, a 46-year-old African-American male died in Minneapolis, Minnesota while being handcuffed and pushed face down on a city street by a white police officer. The officer kept his knee on the man’s neck for over eight minutes. Since the victim had not been responsive for nearly three minutes, the use of excessive force, possibly intended, has been investigated. He was arrested on suspicion of having used a counterfeit $20 bill at a local store.

This incident triggered harsh protests across the country against the treatment of non-white communities in the US. If you lived in such a diverse community where racial, religious, cultural, social, and political gaps have been widening, you would be sensitive and knowledgeable about the differences. How should you become knowledgeable about this complex topic and society without prejudice, discrimination, or bias?

Read this article and find tips to learn about marginalized communities in the US.
